Storms
over Carimar
Once upon a time, on a
small island not far from here. There sat a small town in the
middle of a big, big sea. Carimar was a quiet place with
pleasant people and breath-taking beaches. That is, until the
storms came to town.
One dreadful evening,
a strong gust of wind blew three, large storm clouds bring wind
and rain and other terrible trouble. Carimar would never be the
same again.
The terrible, gray storm clouds
tormented the people of Carimar. Day after day, they blocked out
the sun and poured great, big drops of rain all over the island.
At first, the people of
Carimar were happy, because the rain made the trees and plants
grow green and lush. Flowers blossomed. Fruit ripened.
Vegetables grew. The land flourished. And the people and animals
had plenty to eat.
After a while, though,
everything green began to turn brown. The rains flooded the
land, destroying all the plants and trees. The flowers wilted.
The fruit fell from the branches. The vegetables stopped
growing. The lands suffered. And the people and animals were
cold, wet, and hungry.
The people of Carimar
were in trouble. They had a problem and did not know what to do.
The brave people of Carimar looked the storm clouds in the eye
and began to scream. They screamed and snarled at the storm
clouds to stop. But the storms didn’t stop. The people groaned
and growled at the storm clouds to go away. But the storms
strayed.
The storms were big.
The storms were strong. The storms were more powerful than
people of Carimar. So the frightened people of Carimar gave up,
and the rain kept crashing down.
One day, the quiet
people of Carimar came up with a promising pln. They gathered
stones from the ground and built new houses for themselves on
top of the tallest mountain. These houses would protect them
from the storms and keep them dry and safe.
“We have become like the storm
clouds,” answered Francisco. “Our tears will flood the ants out
of their homes and make them cry, too.”
The people of Carimar
were surprised. How strange! “Perhaps the clouds are just a
little sad,” said Francisco. And all the people of Carimar
started to laugh.
As the people of
Carimar laughed and laughed, the rains slowed until only a
sprinkle remained. “Look!” cried Francisco. “The rain is
stopping. The clouds must have been sad and scared just like
us.” The people of Carimar clapped and cheered. And the rain
came to a complete stop.
From that day on, the
people of Carimar lived happily laughing and enjoying the
splendor of the sun and the gentle island breezes. The storm
cloud stopped their winds and rains and learned to laugh and
smile. Now, they only rain when they see small children crying,
or at night, when everyone is asleep, and they are sad and
lonely.
