The Desert
One of the most
amazing ecosystems is the desert. More than one-third of the
land on Earth is desert. A desert is land where there is not
more than 22 cm of rain per year. Deserts can have extreme
temperatures. For example, it can be 100 degrees during the day
and then 50 degrees at night!
There is very little
water in a desert, but there is a lot of life. There are many
different species of plants that live in the desert. Cactus is
the most well-known desert plant. Some cactuses grow as tall as
10m. There are also many animals in the desert, such as insects,
reptiles, amphibians, mammals... and even fish. The strangest
desert creature is called the lungfish. It lives in the desert
in Africa. It can breathe air and it lives for many months
buried in mud several meters below the desert surface!
